WORK > INSTALLATION

This is a research-oriented project that took place over the course of 2018.

In this installation you see an outline of Los Angeles County made of wood and foam. It has been punctured by thousands of dots with single lines flowing from the incision. Nails, actually. Each nail and thread in this map represent a report of sexual violence that has taken place. Nailed into the landscape of the city, just as it is drilled into the memories of the survivors.

What does it mean to mark the place of a trauma such as this?

This project seeks to visualize the events that often go unnoticed. To see what is ignored.

UNTITLED CITY MAPPING is an ongoing research-based, socially informed artistic study. In these projects, artwork is informed by data. Displayed in these Maps are accounts of reported Sex Crimes in Los Angeles County over the course of 2018. Documentation began on January 1, 2018 at 00:00 and was recorded through December 31, 2018 23:59. These are only representative on REPORTED cases. Please note that the addresses recorded are recovered from a third party tracking system, crimemapping.com, that collects data and tracks criminal cases as made available by Law Enforcement Agencies. Addresses released note the vicinity that the crime took place, rounding to the nearest city block. These locations are not entirely representative of the exact location. Therefore, while these crimes did take place, it cannot be assumed that the images displayed in 'Street View'--specifically the occupants of the households in these image--are necessarily associated with the exact location of the crime. It can only be known that these events did take place on or around that city block.
